TITLE
Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $1,000, offset by the First Council District One-time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department to provide a contribution to Long Beach Architecture Week to support the promotion and programming held at the historic Scottish Rite Temple on September 19, 2020; and
Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $1,000 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.
DISCUSSION
On Saturday, September 19th, the Scottish Rite Event Center in our North Pine Neighborhood hosted a drive-in movie night as part of Long Beach Architecture Week (LBAW). LBAW is a series of tours, events and educational opportunities that celebrate architecture, promote preservation, sustainability, and development in our City while giving participants the opportunity to engage with and activate our different historic neighborhoods. Due to COVID-19, LBAW 2020 has shifted to a variety of events that continue these goals within strong health and safety guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
One of these such events was this drive-in screening of the classic film Metropolis which offered our community the chance to watch this piece of cinema history at one of our City’s historic landmarks. The event sold out and was able to safely bring a fun and educational neighborhood event to a part of Long Beach that hasn’t always had access to these kinds of opportunities. It also provided some of our residents with the opportunity to enjoy a community event without risking the spread of COVID-19 during a summer which has seen the postponement or cancellation of most similar opportunities.
This item was reviewed by Budget Manager Grace H. Yoon on September 23, 2020.
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
The event was held at the Scottish Rite Temple on September 19, 2020 to kick off Architecture Week.
FISCAL IMPACT
This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide a $1,000 contribution to Long Beach Architecture Week, who organized this event, to help offset a portion of the logistical and administrative costs. The total appropriation increase in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $1,000 will be offset by a decrease in appropriation of the First Council District One-Time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. Implementing this recommendation is expected to have minimal impact on staff hours beyond normal budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have a minimal impact on existing City Council Priorities.
