DISCUSSION

Long Beach Pride celebrated its 40th Anniversary in 2023. The annual three-day Long Beach Pride festival, parade, and teen pride was created with the mission to create a safe space to celebrate inclusivity, diversity, and love. These celebrations have helped make Long Beach a more welcoming home to its LGBTQ+ residents. In September of this year, Long Beach lost one of the original founders of Long Beach Pride, Bob Crow. Due to the 40 years plus impact that Bob Crow helped bring to Long Beach, it is appropriate for Long Beach City Council to honor their legacy and support Long Beach Pride in organizing Bob Crow’s memorial services.

New Image Emergency Shelter will be celebrating 33 years of making a difference in the lives of families in low-income neighborhoods and people experiencing homelessness. This organization provides comprehensive case management, supportive services, outreach, referral services and more.

Centro CHA is an active organization serving the Latino community and local Long Beach community as a whole. On Friday, October 13, 2023 they celebrated the 2023 Nuestra Imagen Leadership Awards and Hispanic Heritage Celebration. It is appropriate for City Council to support the organization’s mission to improve quality of life for all living in disinvested communities.

No Financial Management review was able to be conducted due to the urgency and time sensitivity of this item.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide a contribution to Long Beach Pride, in support of the Mr. Bob Crow’s memorial services, in the amount of $500; to New Image Emergency Shelter, in support of the 29th Annual Children’s Christmas Store, in the amount of $500; and to Centro CHA, in support of the 23rd Annual Leadership Awards Celebration, in the amount of $500. The total appropriation increase of $1,500 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of First Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the normal budgeted scope of duties and expected to have minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.
