TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to draft a resolution recognizing every 21st of September as the International Day of Peace in the City of Long Beach.
DISCUSSION
Every year on September 21st, various organizations around the world observe International Day of Peace. This tradition was founded in 1981 by the United Nations, and represents a call to end war, poverty and hunger, and other issues that cause hardship.
The United Nations works to fight inequality, promote and protect human rights, and create action against climate change. These issues are universal, and designating September 21st as International Day of Peace in Long Beach creates an occasion to reexamine issues of inequality and hardship within our community and work together to find better ways to address them. It also provides an opportunity for us to reflect on what is happening internationally and encourage dialogue.
Though the month of September has passed, the City should recognize every 21st of September as World Peace Day to clearly demonstrate that in Long Beach rejects violence and is dedicated to strengthening the ideals of peace, prosperity, justice, and hope for everyone. Now, more than ever, is the time to publicly stand together against hate and violence, and advocate for peace and the fundamental dignity of every human life.
