DISCUSSION

On May 24, 2005, the City Council approved a four-month planning grant for the Best Babies Collaborative Program (BBC) funded by the Los Angeles County Children and Families First Proposition 10 Commission (First 5 L.A.). The purpose of the planning grant was to develop the work plan and the collaborative activities for the implementation period of the program. First 5 L.A.
has subsequently awarded $280,454 for the period October 1, 2005 through June 30, 2006 to the City of Long Beach, through the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) as the lead agency, to commence implementation of the three-year program (October 2005 - July 2008) for the Long Beach-Wilmington Best Babies Collaborative (Collaborative). The DHHS will provide and coordinate perinatal services targeting high-risk women residing in the First 5's targeted zip code areas of 90802,90805,90806,90813, and in the 90744 Wilmington zip code.

The DHHS will work with local service providers, community-based agencies and healthcare organizations to develop and coordinate a comprehensive network of providers and resources to improve pregnancy outcomes for women in these target areas.
