DISCUSSION
Los Angeles County Children and Families First - Proposition 10 Commission (First 5 L.A.) has recently awarded the City a Best Babies Collaborative Planning Grant as part of the Healthy Births Initiative. Under the agreement, the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) will work with local service providers, community-based agencies and healthcare organizations to build a coordinated and comprehensive network of providers and resources to promote and provide services to pregnant women and their families in an effort to improve pregnancy outcomes. The planning strategies will help link existing resources and strengthen the capacity of existing organizations already providing prenatal services in the area. The following eight focused and universal core approaches will be incorporated into the planning strategies to improve pregnancy and birth outcomes in the Long Beach target area: policy and advocacy, community building, health education and messaging, social support, prenatal care quality improvement, interconception care, outreach, and case management. The vision of the First 5 L.A. Healthy Births Initiative is to optimize the health and well- being of each mother, child and family in Los Angeles County. Therefore, the planning grant will focus on ways of improving birth outcomes, such as increasing the number of babies who are carried to full-term, have a healthy birth weight, and are born appropriately developed.
