TITLE
Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $2,000, offset by the Fifth Council District One-Time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department to provide a contribution to:
· $500 to Partners of Parks in support of the Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration;
· $1,000 to support the Uptown Jazz Festival;
· $500 to the Long Beach Century Club in support of the Mayor’s Trophy Charity Golf Tournament; and
Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $2,000 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.
DISCUSSION
Councilwoman Megan Kerr would like to support the Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday, June 17, 2023, at Rainbow Lagoon Park. This annual event recognizes June 19th, 1865, an important date in American history, and is a time to celebrate African American achievements and contributions. The significance of Juneteenth today extends beyond the African American community. It serves as an educational and cultural touchstone for all Americans to learn about the past and its implications on the present. It brings together people of all races, nationalities, and religions to acknowledge a period in our history that has shaped and continues to influence our society. By contributing to the success of this free community event, we can collectively foster a more informed, diverse, and unified community, which aligns with our city’s mission to promote cultural awareness, diversity, and inclusion within our community.
