DISCUSSION

The Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration is taking place on Saturday, June 17th, 2023 hosted in the First District at Rainbow Lagoon Park. Juneteenth is a beautiful and important holiday that celebrates Black culture and freedom recognizing our collective American experience. This is an annual event welcoming of all and open for families, friends, and neighbors to enjoy. As it aligns with the City’s goal to uplift diversity, equity, and inclusivity, it is appropriate for City Council to support a funds transfer to Long Beach Partners of Parks in support of this event.

The Long Beach Tequila Festival is taking place this summer and will be hosted in the First District at Mosaic. This is a fun and culturally prideful event honoring Latin music, food, and drinks. The event will also be uplifting Jalisco’s 200 years of history and tradition. Thus, it is appropriate for City Council to support a funds transfer to Kahlo Creative, LCC in support of this event.

The Long Beach Suffrage 100 is an active organization that helps educate our community on the history of suffrage in California and the United States. This July will commemorate 100 years since the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) was first proposed in Congress. In honor of this remarkable historical date, the Long Beach Suffrage 100 will be hosting a Women’s Fair on July 18th, 2023 at the Long Beach City Hall Plaza. Thus, it is appropriate for City Council to support a funds transfer to Wild West Women, Inc. in support of this event.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS

[Timing Considerations]

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide contributions of $1,000 to Partners of Parks in support of the 2023 Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration,  $1,000 to Kahlo Creative LLC in support of the Long Beach Taco and Tequila Fest,  and $500 to Wild West Women, Inc. in support of the Women’s Fair. The total appropriation increase of $2,500 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of First Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the normal budgeted scope of duties and expected to have minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.
