TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file a presentation on Women’s History Month and receive an update on the Commission on Women and Girls.

DISCUSSION
Every year, the month of March is designated as Women’s History Month and serves as a time to honor and recognize the many contributions women have made to our society. Women’s History Month started as a week-long celebration of women but quickly gained national attention in 1980 and became a month-long period of recognition in 1987. Since 1995, every president has issued proclamations designating the month of March as Women’s History Month.

In September 2021, the City of Long Beach began the process to establish a Commission on Women and Girls. This Commission provides a space for specific education, outreach, and advocacy in our communities for the advancement of women and girls that is long overdue. It will also help create leadership roles for those who identify as female and would discuss women-specific issues like the wage gap and disproportionate domestic violence, among others that the Commission may choose to take up.

This letter requests the City Manager to receive and file a presentation on Women’s History Month and receive an update on the Commission on Women and Girls.

This matter has been reviewed by Budget Analyst Joe R. Guerrero on March 2, 2023.
