TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file report on travel to Washington, D.C. with the Mayor and members of the Federal Legislation Committee.
DISCUSSION
On May 22-24, 2022, the Mayor and members of the Federal Legislation Committee of the Long Beach City Council traveled to Washington, D.C. to share updates on the City’s adopted 2022 Federal Legislative Agenda priorities and discuss issues of importance with members of federal agencies. The delegation included staff from the elected offices; the City’s Government Affairs Manager; and the City’s federal legislative representative, Dentons.
Meetings included the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Department of Labor, National Endowment for the Arts, and the White House Senior Advisor and Infrastructure Coordinator. Among the issues discussed were the following:
• COVID-19 public health response, behavioral health needs, and ongoing direct funding to local health jurisdictions;
• COVID-19 impacts on workforce and employment opportunities;
• Funding needs for the Port of Long Beach’s Goods Movement Workforce Training Campus;
• Funding for historic preservation at the Queen Mary; and
• City priority projects for the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act grant opportunities.
The trip was productive in developing strong connections with federal agency leaders and communicating the City’s legislative and funding priorities. We will continue to closely monitor issues of federal importance and work with the City’s government affairs staff and our federal legislative representative to advance the City Council’s 2022 federal priorities.
