TITLE

DISCUSSION
The Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) was awarded the Fiscal Year 2021 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program - Local Solicitation from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, in the amount of $219,274. The grant monies will be used to support a DNA Criminalist provided by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department assigned to work on Long Beach DNA cases. The grant term is October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2024.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Arturo D. Sanchez on October 18, 2021 and by Budget Analysis Officer Greg Sorensen on October 21, 2021.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on November 9, 2021, to expedite use of grant funds.

FISCAL IMPACT
The City will receive grant funding up to $219,274 for the period of October 1, 2020 to September 30, 2024 from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance. An appropriation increase is requested in the amount of $219,274 in the General Grants Fund Group in the Police Department, offset by grant revenue. The grant does not require any matching or in-kind funds. This recommendation has no staffing impact beyond the normal budgeted scope of duties and is consistent with existing City Council priorities. There is no local job impact associated with this recommendation.
