TITLE

Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $1,000 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.

DISCUSSION
BACKGROUND:

The City Council declared Juneteenth a Day of Celebration in Long Beach this year, to commemorate June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with word that the Civil War had ended and that those enslaved were now free, even though President Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier.

President Biden also signed legislation passed by Congress making Juneteenth a federal holiday. This year’s Juneteenth Celebration in Long Beach was one of the premier Juneteenth celebrations in Southern California, featuring a variety of music, traditional African drumming, a step show, poetry and guest speakers. This contribution to Partners of Parks will help cover some of the costs for the 2021 Juneteenth Celebration.

STATEMENT OF URGENCY:
The approval of this item will help ensure the timely processing of the contribution to help pay expenses.

FISCAL IMPACT
This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide a contribution to Partners of Parks to support the 2021 Juneteenth Celebration. The total appropriation increase in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $1,000 is offset by a decrease of appropriation of Eighth Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department.
