TITLE
Recommendation to request City Manager to work with the Parks, Recreation and Marine Department to report back in 30 days on the feasibility of a pilot ADA beach access mat at the Granada Beach ramp and opportunities to install in other beach and park locations.
DISCUSSION
Throughout the past sixteen months we have seen the important role that our open spaces can play for Long Beach residents for recreation, fresh air, and as a form of self-care and relaxation. Long Beach is lucky to have great neighborhoods, beautiful parks, and an active coastline. All of these assets have been incredibly important to residents in managing the stresses and impacts of the statewide restrictions and social distancing. However, despite significant efforts by the City to ensure that all Long Beach residents feel welcome and have access to all City facilities and resources, one area is not accessible to everyone. Our wonderful beaches are not accessible to residents with mobility limitations.
Our sandy beaches present a difficult access hurdle for residents using wheelchairs, walkers, or other mobility related support. With the goal of allowing all residents to have access to our coastline, the City should evaluate the feasibility of developing a pilot ADA beach access matt at the Granada Beach Launch Ramp to better understand the opportunities, impacts, maintenance, and products available with the goal of developing an ADA beach and parks access program throughout the City. This item is not simply about getting people to the beach, or access to our parks, but beginning to create ways to actively enjoy the water and for kids to play in playgrounds regardless of their mobility.
This matter has been reviewed by Budget Manager Grace H. Yoon on July 1, 2021.
