DISCUSSION
INTRODUCTION:

The Long Beach Rowing Association (LBRA) acts as an essential local and regional steward for the sport of rowing and as a US Rowing Training Center Partner. LBRA works to advance rowing and sportsmanship as well as health and fitness, not to mention community and friendship. Supporting positive fitness and sportsmanship focused priorities is what LBRA does every day to the benefit of the City.

The Third District Council Office would provide a contribution to LBRA for the creation of a multi-week summer camp program for students from underserved communities to participate in a learn to row program. Rowing is notoriously an activity that can be difficult to participate in due to the cost and access and this presents a significant barrier to entry for youth interested in learning about this sport and those who are interested in competing in this sport for purposes of collegiate athletics. The Council District has a goal of developing an annual program designed to bring high school students who have not been exposed to this sport into contact with other youth who are already participating in the Long Beach Junior Crew (LBJC) program as well as volunteer adult coaches from LBRA. This collaboration will allow summer camp participants to learn the sport and set them up with experience, fundamental skills, confidence, and friendships....
