WITHDRAWN

Recommendation to direct City Attorney to draft resolution in support of Los Angeles County’s recent campaign against Hate Crimes entitles LA vs Hate, United Against Hate Week.

DISCUSSION

Long Beach is one of the most diverse populations in a county that is home to a population of more than 10 million residents, including White, Latinx, Black, Asian Pacific Islander and American Indians and Alaska Natives. This diversity of backgrounds and identities has been celebrated by the inaugural LA vs Hate United Against Hate Week, November 30 - December 6, 2020.

The County’s Commission on Human Relations annual Hate Crime Report continue to see hate acts occurring throughout the County.  LA vs Hate United Against Hate Week provided Los Angeles County residents with an opportunity to recognize the County’s diversity, strengthen partnerships to help address hardships faced by victims of hate acts, and find ways to elevate every community and the unique ways they make the County a better, more inclusive and welcoming place to live. LA vs Hate United Against Hate Week symbolizes the Los Angeles County’s dedication to preventing and opposing hate and intolerance in our communities; and to educate young residents on the importance of compassion, and cooperation as key strategies for unlocking understanding and embracing differences between residents.

With the diverse Long Beach communities, we see today, and the importance of supporting all residents of all backgrounds Long Beach should support the inaugural LA vs Hate United Against Hate Week as an important step in bridging divisions and strengthening our communities.
