TITLE
Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $4,000, offset by the First Council District One-time District Priority Funds to provide a contribution to Centro CHA for their food distribution program; and
Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $4,000 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.
DISCUSSION
Centro CHA has a 30-year track record of supporting the Latino community in Long Beach and has been working to address food insecurity in the city during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. As part of this effort, they facilitated a series of food distribution events at the Jenny Oropeza Community Center in Cesar Chavez Park ahead of Thanksgiving. These efforts were able to provide food to over 200 households in the Downtown area, and this contribution of $4,000 provides funding to cover the cost of grocery store gift cards that were included to allow recipients to buy a turkey or other produce to compliment the food distribution for Thanksgiving.
This matter was reviewed by Revenue Management Officer Geraldine Alejo on December 3, 2020.
STATEMENT OF URGENCY
This item is intended to be added to the supplemental agenda for the December 8, 2020 meeting as the food distribution occurred this past week. With limited meetings during December, the funds are needed by Centro CHA to continue to have food distribution funds for this coming holiday season.
FISCAL IMPACT
This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide a contribution of $4,000 to Centro CHA to support their food distribution program. The total appropriation increase of $4,000 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department is offset by the First Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the Citywide Activities Department.
