TITLE

Recommendation to request that the City of Long Beach annually recognize June as Pride Month.

DISCUSSION

INTRODUCTION:

For decades, Long Beach has been a leader in celebrating our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer communities. Our city has long been a leader in supporting the LGBTQ rights movement and annually hosts one of the largest Pride celebrations in the country.

Internationally, Pride celebrations occur in June to commemorate the 1969 Stonewall Riots. Stonewall is widely recognized as the beginning of the modern LGBTQ civil rights movement.

Designating June Pride Month in Long Beach recognizes the impact LGBTQ Americans have had on history and Long Beach’s commitment to achieving equal justice under law for LGBTQ Americans. LGBTQ Americans have made, and continue to make, great, lasting contributions that strengthen the fabric of America.

Long Beach’s leadership and support means we should designate June as Pride Month in Long Beach to continue the recognition and acknowledge the important role we have played and will continue to play in strengthening equality, acceptance, and human rights for the LGBTQ community.
