DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to enter into a contract with GameTime for the purchase of playground equipment to be installed at Peace Park and Martin Luther King, Jr. Park (MLK).

On December 12, 2017, the City Council accepted and appropriated grant funding totaling $981,509 from the California Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), through their Housing-Related Parks Program (Program), for the rehabilitation of park facilities and grounds at Drake Park, Peace Park, and MLK. No matching funds were required as a condition of accepting these funds. Of the total allocation, $350,000 was designated for playground renovation at Peace Park, and $315,754 for playground renovation at MLK.

In the fall of 2017, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) received notification of the State-Wide Healthy Play Initiative grant program opportunity offered by the California Park and Recreation Society (CPRS) and PlayCore Wisconsin, Inc., dba GameTime (GameTime). This grant provides matching funds to buy down the cost of GameTime playground equipment for projects that encourage healthy outdoor play. In addition, PRM received a second and separate grant opportunity directly from GameTime for their 2017 Playground Matching Grant Program. This grant offers up to a 100 percent match for GameTime playground equipment for qualifying new playground projects. PRM has applied for both grants to leverage eligible HCD Program funds at Peace Park and MLK.
