TITLE
Recommendation to request City Attorney to draft a resolution in support of the Los Angeles Air Force Base and the Space and Missile Systems Center.
DISCUSSION
The recently adopted Federal budget includes a proposal for a new round of military base closures under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process. Two Los Angeles County bases, the Los Angeles Air Force Base (LAAFB) and the Space and Missile Systems center (SMC), could be realigned or closed under this process, leading to the loss of thousands of jobs and approximately $1.8 billion in economic activity.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has voted to request Secretary of Defense Charles Hagel and Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James not to close or realign these bases, and has asked the City of Long Beach to adopt a similar resolution. The City should heed this request and adopt a resolution in support of LAAFB and SMC.
