DISCUSSION
Since October 2005, the City Council has approved grant funds for the planning, and implementation, of the Long Beach-Wilmington Best Babies Collaborative Program (BBC) funded by the Los Angeles County Children and Families First Commission (First 5 L.A.). With the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services acting as lead agency, the Health Department oversees the implementation of the program by working with local service providers, community-based agencies and healthcare organizations to maintain a coordinated and comprehensive network of resources to promote and provide services to pregnant women and their families to achieve First 5 LA’s goal: “Babies are born healthy.” The program targets high-risk women residing in the Long Beach zip codes of 90802, 90805, 90806, 90813, and the Wilmington zip code of 90744. First 5 L.A. has subsequently awarded the City of Long Beach $197,084 to continue the program for an additional six-month period (January 1, 2012 to June 30, 2012).

Since its inception six years ago, the BBC Program has provided health education to over 25,819 women/teens; social support classes and education to over 4815 women/teens; case management services to 687 women/teens; and over 2778 home visits to case managed clients.
