Discussion
The City of Long Beach has been awarded a grant by the State Library under the California Reading and Literacy Improvement and Public Library Construction and Renovation Bond Act of 2000 to help fund the design and construction of a new 16,155-square foot Branch Library for the MacArthur Park neighborhood. As part of this grant process, the Long Beach Public Library conducted a comprehensive Community Library Needs Assessment to determine the library service needs of local residents. These needs were developed into a Library Plan of Service that formed the basis of the building program. The Conceptual Design prepared for the grant application has been reviewed and approved by the local community, the City and the State of California Office of Library Construction (OLC).

In order to go forward with the design and construction process, an architect is needed to take the approved conceptual plans and develop them further into the schematic design plans and, ultimately, the construction documents. Furthermore, the work shall integrate building materials and methods that promote environmental quality, economic vitality, and social benefit through the construction and operation of the built environment in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Standard.

The Department of Public Works and Department of Library Services have selected CWA AlA, Inc., (CWA) as the architect of choice for the MacArthur Park Branch Library. CWA's approach to this project centers around the firm's longstanding expertise in designing and programming over fifty libraries in California.
