DISCUSSION
Kaiser Foundation Hospitals has awarded $15,000 to the City of Long Beach, through the Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department), to implement the Long Beach Diabetes Prevention, Detection and Education Program (Program).
The Diabetes Prevention, Detection and Education Program is an extension of the Health Department’s Latino Diabetes Prevention and Management Program, which was established in September 2003 in order to fill an identified need for Spanish-language diabetes education. The Latino Diabetes Program consists of an 11-week diabetes education course that focuses on diabetes self-management, skill building and social support. The program is provided at no cost and is open to the public.
The Program takes a multi-faceted approach to addressing diabetes in Long Beach. Program activities include: diabetes prevention and awareness education for parents of school aged-children and other families in high-need areas of the city; training of community leaders to conduct educational presentations about diabetes and obesity in their neighborhoods and among their social networks; screenings to detect diabetes in individuals and providing phone support to those in need of assistance; and continued provision of diabetes self-management education classes to Spanish speaking individuals with diabetes and their family members.
This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Linda Trang on October 29, 2010 and by Budget Management Officer Victoria Bell on November 1, 2010.
