DISCUSSION
Kaiser Foundation Hospitals has awarded $5,000 to the City of Long Beach, through the Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department), to develop the Young Men of Strength: Building Community through Strength of Character curriculum.

The Long Beach Weed and Seed Program was established June 2007 in response to high levels of violent crime, drug abuse, gang activity and deteriorating neighborhood conditions affecting the health and well-being of Central Long Beach residents. The Youth Leadership Program is Weed and Seed’s newest component of the strategy, and it aims to reduce youth and gang violence in the target area through education, career preparation, leadership training, and social and economic/life skills activities.

The Young Men of Strength: Building Community through Strength of Character curriculum is embedded in the Youth Leadership Program. The curriculum will consist of key elements such as encouraging young men to define manhood; understanding the characteristics of a healthy relationship; foster an understanding of the responsibility and role of men in promoting positive family and community health; and developing a service-learning project. Funding will be utilized to provide research on evidence-based violence prevention curriculum with the key concepts above as the central focus. Also, key community leaders will be interviewed on best practices for violence prevention. The project will culminate with a compilation of recommendations for curriculum implementation.
