TITLE
Recommendation to receive and select a recommended candidate that the City will support at the Gateway Cities Council of Governments (COG) election for the Region 29 seat for the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG).

DISCUSSION
The Gateway Cities Council of Governments (COG) has called for nominations for Councilmembers interested in serving in the Region 29 seat for the Southern California Association of Governments. The COG vote is scheduled for Wednesday, October 6 at 5:00 PM at the COG offices in Paramount.

The SCAG Region 29 Seat is selected by seven Councilmembers from the City of Long Beach and five Councilmembers of the City of Avalon. The seven voting members include all members of the City Council, absent the Vice Mayor and the Long Beach City Council representative to the Gateway COG.

All City Councilmembers are eligible to represent the City in Region 29, and the following Councilmembers submitted their interest in the position as of the COGs September 21,2010 deadline for nominations:

      · Council member James Johnson
      · Councilmember Steven Neal
      · Councilmember Gerrie Schipske

A member of the Avalon City Council has also submitted a letter of interest. As there are multiple City Councilmembers that are interested in serving for Region 29 Seat, it is recommended that the City Council select a recommended candidate that the City will support at Wednesday's election. In order to be elected, this Long Beach representative will still need the support of each of the seven voting members. As such, the seven voting members of the City Council are requested to participate in the vote at the COG meeting on October 6.

SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,

MAYOR BOB FOSTER
