DISCUSSION
According to Parks, Recreation and Marine, Rose Park is located at 8th Street and Orizaba Avenue and is one of the City's oldest parks. "Rose Circle Park," was donated by the Alamitos Land Company on June 10, 1910, for park use. The park radius is 90 feet and the intersecting streets flow around the park. This park was redesigned in 1955. It had four walks leading under old-fashioned arched rose trellises to the center of the park to a circular rose garden.

The park fell into disrepair in the late 1960's and early 1970's as it was located within the right-of-way of the proposed cross-town freeway and many surrounding properties purchased by the California Department of Transportation had been vacated by their residents. After the neighborhood was repopulated in the mid 1970's, residents began efforts to restore the park.

This district contains more than 500 buildings, primarily Craftsman Bungalows constructed between 1910 -1922, with many variations in architectural design such as Spanish Colonial Revival and Neo-Traditional designs of the Forties. During 2008 and 2009 a new gazebo and cement work was completed along with entry trellises, benches and new shrubs, including thematic climbing roses. The community has taken real ownership of the park's wellbeing and continues to fundraise for additional park improvements.

My office has partnered with the Rose Park Neighborhood Association and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine to activate this very small park and ensure safe and equal access for residents. The suggested hours reflect conversations with RPNA, LBPD and the Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine.
