TITLE
Recommendation to adopt resolution declaring results of the City of Long Beach General Municipal Election held Tuesday, June 8, 2010.

DISCUSSION
Pursuant to Municipal Code Section 1.21.010, the City Clerk Department is required to certify election results to the City Council within twenty-one days after the date of the June 8, 2010, General Municipal Election. Certification of the election must comply with the official canvass requirements set forth in the State Elections Code, Division 15, Chapter 4. The City Clerk Department issued its election certification on June 16,2010.

To meet the foregoing requirements, the City Clerk Department has executed the following tasks:

(a) An inspection of all materials and supplies returned by poll workers;

(b) A reconciliation of the number of signatures on the roster with the number of ballots recorded on the ballot statement;

(c) A reconciliation of the number of ballots counted, spoiled, canceled, or invalidated due to identifying marks and over votes, with the number of votes recorded by the vote counting system, including vote-by-mail and provisional ballots;

(d) Processing and counting any valid vote-by-mail and provisional ballots not included in the Election Day semi-final official canvass;

(e) Counting any valid write-in votes;

(f) Reproducing any damaged ballots, if necessary;

(g) Reporting final results to the governing board;

(h) Conduct of a public hand-count of ballots cast in a randomly selected one (1) percent of precincts, plus one additional precinct for each race tabulated by the City's voting system; and

(i) Identification and reporting of any discrepancies between the voting system count and the hand-count.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
Approval of the suggested action is requested on June 22, 2010.
