TITLE

Recommendation to recognize the role played by multiple city departments and their staff members in response to Hurricane Kay and it’s impacts in Long Beach.

DISCUSSION

September 8, 2022 through September 11, 2022 Hurricane Kay made its way north along the West coast of Mexico. The Hurricane included high winds and rain, as well as significant increases in tides and wave activity. Although, this hurricane and the worst of its impacts did not make landfall here in Long Beach, its size and strength were still felt, especially along our local coastlines.

In response, there were emergency messages sent out citywide to Long Beach residents to prepare for the storm and to avoid our coastline and city staff were mobilized to participate in the emergency response. Incredible work was done by city staff from numerous departments and work groups including Lifeguards, Fire Department, Marine Bureau, Parks, Recreation and Marine Department, Public Works Department, Water Department, Port of Long Beach, Search and Rescue, Police Department, CERT, and countless volunteers.  For many, this involved working in dangerous conditions for 18-hour shifts in rain, wind, and high tides. Therefore, it is important that we, as a City Council, show our gratitude for this commitment and the incredible work done throughout the emergency response from City staff who went above and beyond their typical duties. The individual departments and the individual city staff members deserve to be recognized for their great work during Hurricane Kay.
