DISCUSSION

The Los Angeles Galaxy is one of two major professional soccer teams in the greater Los Angeles area that play in Major League Soccer. In addition to their professional soccer team, they have a youth programming division in which they provide things such as youth camps, the Galaxy Discover Program, as well as various Galaxy clinics.

On Saturday, July 30, 2022, the Youth Programming Division of Los Angeles Galaxy partnered with the First Council District to run a free youth soccer clinic for children in Long Beach located at the Drake Park Artificial Turf Field. This event featured instruction and training for youth ranging from 6 - 16 years old. An inflatable goal allowed players to work on their shot accuracy. Groups were formed based on age, and players were able to work with professional soccer trainers on various soccer skills. This clinic was a wonderful opportunity for youth in Long Beach to gain skills, get exercise, and build friendships all at no cost. It is appropriate for Council to support this item.

This item has been reviewed by Recovery Budget Officer Dee Okam on September 25, 2022.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide a contribution to Los Angeles Galaxy Foundation in support of a youth soccer clinic. The total appropriation increase of $420 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of First Council District One-Time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the normal budgeted scope of duties and expected to have minimal impact on existing City Council priorities. There is no local job impact associated with this item.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,

MARY ZENDEJAS COUNCILWOMAN,
