DISCUSSION

Casa Guerrero is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to ýstrengthen and empower their community through education, job training and health workshops, having stronger, safer, and healthier communitiesý. They offer Hispanic/Latino senior adults an opportunity to learn how to read and write in Spanish through their elementary and middle school programs. This contribution will empower their students by providing them with learning supplies and materials.

The Happy Sundays free music festival on August 28, 2022, 12 pm - 9 pm. This event brings thousands of people to the Zaferia District to hear multiple musicians and bands at multiple venues throughout the entire Zaferia District - all for free. Most venues allow children of all ages, and our local restaurants and retailers benefit too. This year’s event will be held at 10 different venues in the Zaferia District. This contribution will support the Zaferia Business Association in providing free transportation for this event to enable residents and visitors to easily move from venue to venue.

The Friends of the Long Beach Public Library and the Library Foundation are holding the annual librarian appreciation party in late August, and this contribution will help them show support and gratitude to the library staff who serve so many residents in our city day in and day out.

Artist Dave Van Patten’s iconic mural in Zaferia on the corner of Anaheim Street and N. Gladys Avenue in Council District 2 was recently vandalized on Friday, May 27. While the artist recently restored the artwork, this contribution will help cover the costs associated with the restoration. The 60-foot mural was painted during POW! WOW! Long Beach in 2017 and is referred to as the “Alex’s Bar Mural.” It took the artist and his team nine days to create, with many of those days spent working 12-hour shifts from morning until night.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager to support various community events serving residents of the Second Council District. The appropriation increase of $1,420 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of Second Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have a minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.
