TITLE
Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $1,000, offset by the Seventh Council District One-time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department to provide a donation to Partners of Parks to support the Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration; and
Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $1,000 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.
DISCUSSION
Dating back to 1865, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the end to slavery in the United States, when General George Granger rode into Texas and informed African Americans that President Abraham Lincoln ended slavery, two years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Despite this day’s long history, it has only been designated as a federal holiday beginning last year. In recognition of this historic event, the Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration will be held June 18, 2022. This important event will allow for a greater opportunity to share the rich history of Juneteenth with the residents of Long Beach.
This matter was reviewed by Budget Manager Grace H. Yoon on May 6, 2022.
FISCAL IMPACT
This recommendation requests the City Manager to provide a contribution to Partner of Parks for the Long Beach Juneteenth Celebration. The total appropriation increase of $1,000 in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department will be offset by a decrease of appropriation of the Seventh Council District One-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The recommendation is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the normal budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have a minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.
SUGGESTED ACTION
Approve recommendation.
