Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute an agreement, and all necessary documents, subcontracts, or any subsequent amendments, including amending the award amount, with the State of California Department of Public Health, to accept and expend grant funding in the amount of $14,453,253 for the Women, Infants and Children Nutrition Supplement Program, for the period of October 1, 2022 through September 30, 2025. DISCUSSION
Since 1974, the Department of Health and Human Services (Health Department) has operated the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Supplement Program for low-income families through a contract with the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH). This program provides nutrition education through in-group and individual counseling, supplemental food vouchers, breastfeeding support, and health and social services referrals to eligible participants throughout Long Beach.
The WIC Program serves approximately 15,830 families per-month through five sites located throughout Long Beach. Families receive funds on a WIC electronic balance transfer card to purchase healthy supplemental foods from WIC-authorized vendors, which brings in additional dollars to the local economy and increases access to healthier food that would otherwise be lacking.
This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Taylor M. Anderson on April 19, 2022 and by Revenue Management Officer, Geraldine Alejo on April 21, 2022.
TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on May 10, 2022, to provide adequate time to execute the agreement by October 1, 2022 and to continue providing services without interruption.
FISCAL IMPACT
