DISCUSSION
The Workforce Investment Network (Network) submitted a grant proposal with the LB Community College District totaling $500,000 to the State's Labor and Workforce Development Agency and the California Energy Commission to implement a program that prepares eligible individuals for entry-level employment as green vehicle service technicians and enhances the skills of incumbent workers to progress from diesel mechanics to CNG/LNG mechanics.

The Network's proposal was one of six projects funded under the category of Alternative and Renewable Fuel or Vehicle Technologies, and will receive $500,000 to implement the Pacific Gateway Green Vehicle Technician Training Program that will target services to 210 persons across four distinct segments of the Network's customer base: lowskilled, unemployed residents; recently dislocated workers with transferable skills; recently returned veterans; and incumbent (existing) workers in the industry.

The Green Vehicle Technician Training Program is a partnership, linking activities and resources with educational institutions, community-based/nonprofit agencies, and numerous employers in the region. The local partners will create a seamless system of service delivery for the participating customers, complementing the services available at the Network's career centers in Long Beach, Torrance, and Los Angeles.
