TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute an agreement, and all necessary documents including any subsequent amendments extending the term, with California State University, Long Beach (CSULB), of Long Beach, CA, to establish and provide learning opportunities for select college students, at no cost to the City or students, for the purpose of providing Career Internship Experiences, for the period of September 15, 2021 through September 14, 2026. DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to enter into an agreement with CSULB to place enrolled college students in an internship, in partnership with Pacific Gateway (PG), within various City departments through the Long Beach Community Internship Program (LBCIP).
The LBCIP is a collaborative effort between CSULB and the City launched in Spring 2021. The LBCIP recruits, places, and mentors student interns across six of the seven CSULB colleges; Liberal Arts, Business, Engineering, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Art, and Health and Human Services. The goals of the program are to increase the number of Long Beach Promise students, who are graduates from a Long Beach area high school, to complete internships, provide opportunities for students to do meaningful work in their own neighborhoods, including work that promotes social justice, hone professional skills, network, explore local career opportunities, and establish collaboration with nonprofits and City departments to create a pipeline of talent.
Creating a partnership between CSULB and the City, will provide learning opportunities for select college students at no cost to the City or students. CSULB, in partnership with PG, will facilitate the administration of the program, including placement and tracking of the students.
