TITLE

Recommendation to increase appropriations in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $2,500, offset by the Third Council District One-time District Priority Funds transferred from the Citywide Activities Department to provide a payment to Community Action Team for the Long Beach Organic Community Garden at 914 Redondo Avenue; and

Decrease appropriations in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department by $2,500 to offset a transfer to the City Manager Department.

DISCUSSION

On December 10, 2019 the City Council approved an Interim Park Use Permit to establish a community garden at 914 Redondo Avenue. Activating vacant lots with local food production reduces blight, increases neighborhood safety, and helps further the City's sustainability goals allowing residents a safe opportunity to garden in our urban environment. Encouraging community driven projects where residents collaboratively work together is a benefit to the City.

This matter was reviewed by Budget Manager, Grace Yoon on July 21, 2020.

FISCAL IMPACT

This recommendation requests the City Manager Department to provide a payment to Community Action Team in support of Long Beach Organic Community Garden. The total appropriation increase in the General Fund Group in the City Manager Department by $2,500 is offset by a decrease of appropriation of Third Council District one-time District Priority Funds in the General Fund Group in the Citywide Activities Department. The requested action is anticipated to require a minimal level of staff hours beyond the budgeted scope of duties and is expected to have minimal impact on existing City Council priorities.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.
