DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to enter into a contract with South Coast Shipyard, Inc., for parts and repair services for Fire Rescue Boat Unit 129. The rescue boat is used by the Fire Department for lifeguard patrol and rescue services of the City’s beaches and marine areas.

Scheduled repairs are critical to preserve the overall condition and service life of this boat due to the saltwater environment. The proposed repairs for the fire rescue boat include a pump system reconfiguration, replacement of the pump engine, and replacement of two main engines. The non-compliant engines will be replaced with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compliant engines per California Air Resources Board (CARB) requirements. These modifications will make the boat safer and more efficient.

The City Council previously authorized similar repairs for three other fire rescue boats on October 23, 2018. This is the first of the remaining three marine vessels to receive this service. Service for the other two boats will be requested during the FY 21 budget development process. The hulls of all units are in very good condition and replacing the engines will extend the scheduled life of the boats for at least five additional years.
