DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to execute a contract with South Bay Counseling Center to provide a prevention project to develop leadership skills for transitional aged youth enrolled at Beach High School, of Long Beach, CA, a continuation high school.

The purpose of this prevention project includes increasing social connections for youth; providing youth with strategies to build emotional resilience through life skills and leadership training; increasing sense of inclusion and developing talents and skills; building youth knowledge of available beneficial assistance/resources and enhancing ability to access as needed; and, enhancing and expanding youth community-based networks through trainings.

The deliverables of this prevention project include: two school-wide assemblies on hope that will include 100 students; three classroom workshops with 50 participants each, covering Hope and Resiliency, Healing with High Hope, and Expressing Your Best Self; one drop-in program (50 participants); extended drop-in hours for access to mentors and leadership development (participants vary); and, one culminating event.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Taylor M. Anderson on March 26, 2020 and by Revenue Management Officer Geraldine Alejo on March 31, 2020.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on April 14, 2020, to ensure an agreement is in place and revenues can be received to offset program costs for the period of October 1, 2019 through December 31, 2019.
