DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to enter into a contract with Coffman Specialties, Inc., for improvements to Taxiway C (project) at the Long Beach Airport (Airport). The project includes the conversion of the decommissioned Runway 16L-34R pavement to new concrete pavement that will be designated as Taxiway C. Existing Taxiway C, currently located directly west of the terminal apron, is the primary means of access to and from aircraft gates for commercial passenger aircrafts. Upon project completion, existing Taxiway C pavement area will be designated as part of the terminal apron. Shifting Taxiway C away from the terminal ramp vicinity will alleviate congestion, reduce push-back incidents, and increase operational safety.

The project also includes the reconfiguration of the airfield geometry “hot spot” at the non-standard Taxiway J crossing of Runway 12-30, which will enhance pilot’s situational awareness and safety. Additional improvements will include the construction of new connecting taxiway, grading and drainage improvements, hydro-seeding of graded infield areas, new light-emitting diode (LED) airfield signage and lighting improvements, and taxiway markings.
