TITLE

Recommendation to receive and file a report from the City Manager on earthquake preparedness in Long Beach, including but not limited to the Alert Long Beach system, seismic studies of buildings in the city, and general readiness for natural disasters.

DISCUSSION

The recent string of earthquakes from Ridgecrest have brought the first serious seismic activity to Long Beach in decades. While our City departments, including Fire, Police and Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communication, responded quickly to assess any damage and were ready to provide aid if needed, this provides a good opportunity to review disaster response protocols. This report is expected to include information on the City's notification system through Alert Long Beach, the City's work to assess and address seismic issues in Long Beach, what residents can do to be prepared and assist first responders in the event of a major earthquake, and other actions by our City departments and emergency response partners to make sure our City is prepared to respond when a natural disaster does affect Long Beach.

FISCAL IMPACT

The implementation of this recommendation is anticipated to result in a minimal impact to staff hours beyond normal budgeted scope of duties and a minimal impact on City Council priorities.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,

ROBERT GARCIA
