TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute all documents necessary to enter into a Reimbursement Agreement, and any subsequent amendments, with the Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) to reimburse the City of Long Beach, Fire Department (LBFD) $21,000 to provide a Junior Lifeguard Preparatory Course at Cabrillo and Jordan High Schools for LBUSD students;
Authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute all documents necessary to enter into a Reimbursement Agreement, and any subsequent amendments, with the LBUSD to reimburse LBFD $30,000 for tuition for LBUSD students to participate in the summer Long Beach Junior Lifeguard Program; and
Increase appropriations in the Tidelands Operating Fund (TF 401) by $51,000 in Long Beach Fire Department (FD), offset by reimbursement revenue. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
Following the great success of previous swim programs at City of Long Beach (City) pools, City Council approval is now requested to enter into two Reimbursement Agreements with the LBUSD. The first agreement is to allow the LBFD to expand the Junior Lifeguard Preparatory Course currently operating out of Silverado Pool into Cabrillo and Jordan High Schools. This course prepares prospective Junior Lifeguards to successfully meet the minimum swimming standards that allow for full participation in the summer Junior Lifeguard Program (JG Program), known throughout the community as the Junior Guard Program, for ages 9 to 17. The second agreement is to cover the tuition for LBUSD students to participate in the JG Program. The JG Program has been operating since 1967 and has historically prepared participants for careers in public safety.
