TITLE

Recommendation to request City Manager to report back within 60 days on how the City can work with traffic and navigation app companies to reduce the prevalence of cut through traffic routed through residential neighborhoods.

DISCUSSION

Long Beach residents often present concerns about traffic speeds and volumes.

In many of these instances residents have stated that these increases in volumes

are likely coming as a result of smart phone application (app) based traffic mapping

and navigation programs routing drivers off of major corridors and on to smaller

residential streets. This is done to create cut through traffic that avoids certain

major corridors that were designed and intended to carry higher traffic speeds and

volumes than the small residential streets these apps may be routing drivers down

instead.

This matter was reviewed by Budget Manager Grace H. Yoon on March 6, 2019.

FISCAL IMPACT

City staff will look into what is required to compile this report and will report back

prior to 60 days on any staff impacts or impact on existing City Council priorities

as a result of compiling this report and moving this concept forward.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.
