TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute an agreement, and any necessary amendments, with the American Library Association (ALA) to accept and expend grant funding in the amount of $1,200, for a Great Stories Club; and

DISCUSSION
The Library Services Department (Library) grant application to the American Library Association (ALA) was approved. The Library was awarded grant funding in the amount of $1,200 for a Truth, Racial Healing and Transformation Great Stories Club for the theme “Finding Your Voice: Speaking Truth to Power.”

The Library was selected as one of 70 libraries nationwide to take part in this grant - a reading and discussion program for underserved teens. Library staff will work with teens to read and discuss stories exploring questions of race, equity, identity, history, institutional change, and social justice. Additionally, the Library will receive 11 copies each of 4 related books, for a total of 44 books. With this funding and materials, the Library will be able to send one employee to a grant orientation/workshop, instructing them to lead book clubs and discussions with the underserved teen population.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Amy R. Webber on February 6, 2019 and by Budget Management Officer Rhutu Amin Gharib on February 18, 2019.
