DISCUSSION
The City of Long Beach was recently allocated grant funding from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance for the Recovery Act: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (ARRA JAG) Formula in the amount of $1,627,573. The Department of Justice has designated 79 jurisdictions within the County of Los Angeles as disparate jurisdictions with a requirement to submit a joint application. The City of Los Angeles, acting as fiscal agent for all jurisdictions, requires ten percent for administration costs, with the City of Long Beach to receive a final award of $1,464,816. The grant monies will be used for front line law enforcement to fund roughly 17,000 hours of additional police presence in high crime areas and to purchase 145 mobile car radios, which will improve communications reliability, enhance officer safety and help ensure interoperability with regional partners.

Additionally, the City of Long Beach was recently allocated grant funding for the fifth year from the Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG 09) Program FY 2009 Local Solicitation in the amount of $395,001. The Department of Justice has designated 60 jurisdictions within the County of Los Angeles as disparate jurisdictions with a requirement to submit a joint application. The City of Los Angeles, acting as fiscal agent for all jurisdictions, requires seven percent for administration costs, with the City of Long Beach to receive a final award of $367,351.
