DISCUSSION
Since 2005, the City of Long Beach (City) has engaged in three citywide strategic planning efforts aimed at promoting the physical and mental health, well-being, and quality of life of older adults. The City recognizes the latest demographic trends highlighting the growth of older adults and the need to begin planning how to best serve residents of all ages in the City.

In early 2018, the City of made a public commitment to enhance the quality of life of residents as they age by joining AARP’s Network of Age-Friendly Communities and, in May 2018, the Long Beach Healthy Aging Center was launched, through the support of one-time funding to pay for the Aging Services Program Manager.

Independence at Home, a SCAN Community Service, has provided a $30,000 sponsorship to the City to assist with the Age-Friendly Initiative. The funds will help with the planning, scheduling, and meeting facilitation of the Age-Friendly Steering Committee and four issue-area workgroups during the one-year planning period and strategy development phase focused on older adults, as well as provide funds to cover provision of light food and refreshments to meeting participants.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Linda T. Vu on October 1, 2018 and by Revenue Management Officer Geraldine Alejo on October 3, 2018.
