TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute a Temporary Facility Use Permit at the Miller Family Health Education Center with Goodwill, Serving the People of Los Angeles County, for a period of 18 months from September 10, 2018 through March 9, 2020, and any necessary extensions at the discretion of the City Manager. DISCUSSION
Since 1974, the City of Long Beach (City) has been providing services to improve family wellness at four geographically placed facilities centers located at the: Central Facilities Center, 1133 Rhea Street; North Facilities Center, 6335 Myrtle Avenue; West Facilities Center, 2125 Santa Fe Avenue; and, Miller Family Health Education Center, 3820 Cherry Avenue.
In addition to City services, community-based services have been provided by a variety of local non-profit agencies that occupy office space at these sites through Facility Use Permits. Agencies utilizing space at these various facilities are required to be non-profit agencies, and must address a critical need at the local level. Space is, provided on a first-come, first-served basis, based on availability. All agencies must meet City insurance requirements.
Goodwill currently partners with the Health and Human Services Department to provide life skills, employment preparation and job placement services at the Multi-Service Center for the Homeless, sign language interpretation at Women, Infants and Children (WIC) sites, parking lot maintenance and debris removal for the Housing Authority, and life skills, employment preparation, and job placement services in the north area of the City. Goodwill currently operates under a Facility Use Permit for space located at the North Facilities Center. However, due to construction and remodeling scheduled for that facility, it was necessary to move Goodwill to the Miller Family Health Education Center during this process.
