TITLE
Recommendation to receive and file a report from the Long Beach Fire Department on the status of illegal firework outreach, education, and enforcement plans; and a presentation from the Third Council District Committee on illegal fireworks mitigation recommendations.
DISCUSSION
Every year around the Fourth of July fireworks become a concern to many residents throughout Long Beach. They cause injuries and property damage, they frighten pets, and can start fires in residential neighborhoods, or our open spaces that are experiencing drought conditions. Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach, however their continued use in many parts of the city cause frustration in many residents, and create an incredibly difficult job for our Fire Department.
In working with our Fire Department, last year my office set up a committee of Third District residents to become better educated on the topic and develop recommendations. They have met several times since the establishment of the informal committee, receiving presentations and engaging in discussions from a number of city departments while developing their recommendations.
With the Fourth of July only weeks away, it would be useful for the City Council to receive an update on the Fire Departments plans to address the issues we are likely to see related to fireworks, as well as for the City Council to receive a brief presentation from the Third District Residents Fireworks Committee on mitigation recommendations.
