TITLE

Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute all necessary documents to receive and expend grant funding in the amount of $8,737 from the California Office of Emergency Services Paul Coverdell Forensic Sciences Improvement Grants Program; and

Increase appropriations in the General Grants Fund (SR 120) in the Police Department (PD) by $8,737, offset by grant revenue.  (Citywide)

DISCUSSION

The City of Long Beach Police Department (LBPD) was recently awarded the FY 17 Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program (Coverdell 17) in the amount of $8,737.  The grant monies will be used to provide training to improve the skill level and efficiency of Forensic Science Services Division staff who analyze crime scenes and evidence in support of investigations.  The grant term is January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018.

This matter was reviewed by Deputy City Attorney Monica J. Kilaita and by Budget Management Officer Rhutu Amin Gharib on March 21, 2018.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS

City Council action is requested on April 17, 2018, to expedite the use of grant funds.

FISCAL IMPACT

This grant is currently unbudgeted; therefore, an appropriation increase in the General Grants Fund (SR 120) in the Police Department (PD) in the amount of $8,737 is requested.  Grant revenues will offset the expense appropriation and the grant does not require any matching funds.  There is no local job impact associated with this recommendation.

SUGGESTED ACTION

Approve recommendation.

Respectfully Submitted,

ROBERT G. LUNA

CHIEF OF POLICE
