TITLE

Recommendation to establish the City of Long Beach as an official affiliate of the National Digital Inclusion Alliance.

DISCUSSION

The National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NOlA) along with Mobile Citizens coalition have put together a special project called "Digital Inclusion Trailblazers". This is a first of its kind database of local government initiatives that aim to close the digital divide so that other municipalities can use it as a tool to further promote digital inclusion initiatives in communities across the nation. These Trailblazers meet at least one of eight key indicators of municipal digital inclusion leadership including leading a community Digital Inclusion planning process and funding public access computer labs to name a couple. There are currently 23 municipal government bodies that are NOlA affiliates including the Cities of Seattle, Boston, and Oakland.

Additionally, the NOlA has championed Digital Inclusion Week, an annual celebration which provides an opportunity for community leaders to raise awareness about digital disparities in their own cities. Throughout Digital Inclusion Week, various organizations across the nation host events to share specific examples of how local stakeholders can work in communities that are digitally disadvantaged and highlight work that is being done to meet community needs in these spaces.

In becoming a formal affiliate of the NOlA, at no cost to the city, and committing to annually recognize Digital Inclusion Week the City of Long Beach will affirm its commitments to equity, technology and innovation.
