DISCUSSION
City Council approval is requested to enter into agreements with Sprint Solutions (Sprint), Verizon Wireless (Verizon) and AT&T Mobility (AT&T) to provide cellular broadband services.

The Technology and Innovation Department (TI) is responsible for administering cellular broadband service for the City of Long Beach’s (City) mobile workforce. The City currently uses over 900 mobile cellular data devices, of which approximately 60 percent are used by Public Safety departments. As bandwidth capabilities have continued to improve, the use of cellular data technology has also continued to grow, enabling the use of more City applications from the field.

The Police and Fire Departments recently upgraded their mobile data computer system to ruggedized laptop computers and tablets to enable more work to be completed in the field. By using cellular data modems, staff can remotely access the City’s network to write reports, research computerized records, retrieve investigative database information and photographs, and access other City-related applications from the field. Wireless broadband devices are also used to provide connection to remote offices.

The State of California Department of General Services has executed Participating Addendum No. 7-10-70-15 with Sprint, Addendum No. 7-10-70-16 with Verizon, and Addendum No. 7-11-70-17 with AT&T under the National Association of State Procurement Officials (NASPO) ValuePoint cooperating purchase agreement for wireless products and services. ...
