Recommendation to receive and file a staff report regarding the National Cyber Security Awareness Month of October.

DISCUSSION
The City of Long Beach is joining the Department of Homeland Security in honoring the National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) held annually in October. This is an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cyber security. Each week in October is dedicated to a specific cyber security theme with corresponding information on how to protect systems from a cyber-attack.

The Technology and Innovation Department will highlight the following weekly themes:

2: October 9-13 Cyber Security in the Workplace is Everyone’s Business
3: October 16-20 Today’s Predictions for Tomorrow's Internet Smart Cities
4: October 23-27 The Internet Wants YOU
5: October 30-31 Protecting Critical Infrastructure from Cyber Threats

Just as technology continues to evolve, so has the malicious innovation in the cyberthreat landscape. Cyber-attacks on corporations, governmental agencies, and individuals are becoming increasingly widespread and complex.

In an attempt to raise awareness and heighten the City's security posture to fight against cyber-attacks, the Technology and Innovation Department will display posters, show videos, and distribute brochures and pamphlets to aid City employees in understanding the actions they can perform to protect the City form a cyber security breach.

In addition, on October 26, 2017, the Technology and Innovation Department will be hosting the First Annual City Cyber Security Summit, in support of National Cyber Security Awareness Month. This event will bring City employees and cyber security experts together to discuss "Cyber Attacks Through Social Engineering" and "Cyber Security in the Mobility Age."
