TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Manager, or designee, to execute an Agreement with StoryCorps, to record community member interviews that will be archived in the American Folklore Center at the Library of Congress. (Citywide)
DISCUSSION
This year, the Department of Library Services received a National Medal from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for having an outstanding record of community service. Since 2009, IMLS has worked with StoryCorps to provide all National Medal recipients three days of on-site community recordings. These recordings celebrate the diversity, dedication, and personal stories of National Medal communities by capturing the stories of community members in an interview. As specified in the Agreement, up to 15 Long Beach community members will be interviewed for 40-minutes at the Michelle Obama Library on November 16 through 18, 2017. These recordings will ultimately be used by both the City of Long Beach and StoryCorps to broadcast and promote oral history interviews. A copy of the recordings will be retained by both parties and participants, as well as the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. In the recordings, community members will be prompted to convey how the library impacted the community member’s life, and/or reflect their Long Beach native or immigrant experience, as well as explain the impact they have had on Long Beach or Long Beach has had on them, etc. The Agreement specifies recording and footage use terms, and includes the release participating community members will be required to sign when interviewing.

TIMING CONSIDERATIONS
City Council action is requested on October 10, 2017, to commence recording preparation to occur in November.
