TITLE
Recommendation to authorize City Attorney to pay sum of $930,500, in full settlement of lawsuit entitled Miguel Vazquez v. City of Long Beach, et al., and $1,546,500, in full settlement of lawsuit entitled Miguel Contreras v. City of Long Beach, et al.
DISCUSSION
On November 27, 2010, plaintiffs were arrested and force was used against them during the arrest. Plaintiffs later filed lawsuits alleging that their civil rights were violated.
After a jury trial and extensive post-trial negotiations, the parties reached a tentative settlement of both actions: (1) $930,500 for the Vazquez matter, including attorney's fees and costs; and, (2) $1,546,500 for the Contreras matter, including attorney's fees and costs.
The Economic Development and Finance Committee approved the proposed settlements on June 20, 2017.
